There’s a tired old couple in a street cafe They’re quiet together and happy that way He looks at her, he understands When she looks confused then he takes her hand The great depression, two world wars And raising kids and losing homes She looks at him she understand When he looks defeated she takes his hand They used to make out in her daddies car Or in the shadow of his parents door Everyone knew they went all the way Some people thought they’d get married one day And you know that’s what they did Their wedding vows were “The hell with it” They honeymooned across state lines Then setting up shop at a five and dime They stuck together through thick and thin The years rolled by, where they been Once he got mad, threatened to leave And once she threw all his shit in the street When life’s too smooth, you’ll fall down And when things get rocky just hold your ground There’s fighting and kissing and making demands And to settle it down, just hold hands Theres a tired old couple in a street cafe They’re quiet together and happy that way he looks at her he understand she looks at him and she takes his hand

What you gonna do with your broken heart That you gave away til it came apart Will you put it back together with tape and glue And kiss the first guy who smiles at you What you gonna do in your empty bed Lay awake all night cause you can’t forget The dream you had you thought was true Until that dream walked out on you Just put it all behind you and don’t forget It’s a cold hard world that breeds regret Keep looking forward with sparkles in your eye Take you time you’ll get it right What you gonna do when your on your own In an empty house will you moan and groan fill up a bottle with salty tears Cryin’ about how life ain't fair Well life ain’t fair that’s obvious Just go ahead ask any of us We’ve all been kicked when we’ve been down Broken hearts don’t make no sound Well put it all behind you and don’t forget It’s a cold hard world that breeds regret Just put it back together with love and care Warm your heart and I’ll be there

I should write a love song for you , I should write a love song for you and fill it with deep gratitude, I should write a love song for you you gave me a shoulder to lean on you gave me a couch I could sleep on You helped me get back , up on my feet You even gave me, some money, to eat on There’s the time you brought me some gas When I was broke down on the road I had no excuses and I couldn’t pay you back That’s just how it goes, you said that’s just how it goes The night in Sault Ste. Marie The border guard took our ID’s They found a little pot and they threw us in jail And only I walked free You said it had nothing to do with me I glad that my cards make it through Im glad that you write back to me Ill keep sending you letters Keep on writing me back I’ll come back to Sault Ste .Marie I’ll be back in one to three

Lonesome Man 04:28
Hello friends can you understand What it takes to love, a lonesome man See the glory of the day See a woman with a smile on her face She takes his head into her arms Tries so hard and her smile fades away Taking walks out in the rain Passing time and passing trains They go click clack click clack click clack Ill be leaving and then I’m coming back Who can hear me sing this song Who will listen and who can sing along As I die, I return to the earth And as I live, I sing my rebirth As the evening takes the day Night takes over And the daylight fades Its easy to look up to the stars Point one out and say “There you are”

It’s been years since we said hello Since we said good-bye It was great to hear you on the radio And it was great to hear you live Now I know that I’m not much Theres better fish in the sea Oh I don’t want to kiss or fuck Would you just write a love song for me? Make it fast or make it slow As long as you make it go Bout how your missing these two strong hands That can hold you when your low I don’t care about the truth Cause I’m a sentimentalist we were made for each other Though we’ve never even kissed Won’t you write me a love song And make it so smooth Ill be your all nite lover, under the covers There’s nothing that I won’t do Won’t you write me a love song As your passing thru When your driving to another gig Ill write a love song for you There the funny story About how we met How we were left alone together In your friends apartment And then our love just seemed to grow Until it couldn’t grow no more And then it up and did And we’re still wanting more Wont you sing me a love song Point me out from the stage Ill sing right back to you Ill point you out from the audience Our love’s so true We’ll get them singing along
and then the happy ending When we become the song Now the weeks have turned to months And the months have turned to years And I’ve turned to drinking 12 packs of beer Cause you didn’t write that song So I know that this won’t come true Won’t you please write me a song I wrote one for you Wont you sing me a love song Point me out from the stage Ill sing right back to you Ill point you out from the audience Our love’s so true We’ll get them singing along
and then the happy ending When we become the song It’s been years since we said hello since we said good-bye It was great to hear you on radio And it was great to hear you live

Well it started as a drink with friends Then somebody went to score Then we called up Mike, Jake, Katie and Kate And had ‘em stop by the liquor store We got out a couple guitars Katie she can really play the bass Then we drank and we played, we partied and sang Till the cops kicked us out of that place Well I’m gonna quit drinking tomorrow And in the morning you will see Some sorry, hung over bastard
with words written all over me It’s written on my forehead Its written on my derriere “Im gonna quit drinking tomorrow So get me another beer” I put a 6 pack in the fridge I hid a couple in the crisper drawer There a bottle of Robitussin And a flask filled with Laphroaig We better get down to business There’s a lot of work we gotta get done Cause if I’m gonna quit drinking tomorrow This liquor had better be gone I said the same thing last week I say it when I get too tight “Im gonna quit drinking tomorrow” And the time is finally right Cause my wife quit yesterday The kids are coming home from school There no wood left in the woodbox And the town drunk just called me a fool

i've been making love since the day we broke up to the flowers in the alley and the ice cream truck there ain't nothin' you won't want to make love to after you get out of the bottomless blues walkin down the aisle i was holding your hand feeling like the poster of a wanted man someone had a gun someone said "i do" someone pulled the trigger and said " i do too" well you knew i was nothing more than just a snake in the grass i'd give anything for a free piece of ass just a free talking, low ballin, son of a gun there weren't nothing in this world that could settle me down well now i sit alone on a saturday night sitting, writing songs by candlelight baby in the next room snoring away soundin like a forty year old lost highway

Danville 04:52
Evening came to Danville Waiting on a train Waiting for the one you love. And standing in the rain Maybe you should slow it down Why do you think it’s true How many times will you trust a stranger When a stranger says ”I love you” How many times will you trust a stranger You waited and you wanted You loved and been denied You’ve told the truth and been accused Of spreading only lies Oh truth is what you wanted And truth is what we agreed Please just look me in the eyes and pledge honesty Please just look me in the eyes Lets grow old together Will you be my confidant There so many great words that rhyme with that Like Kant, and Jaunt and Flaunt Oh Ill stay here and Ill hold you high Whisper a sweet caress I will keep you close to me I give you my word and nothing else I will keep you close to me Everyone likes to dream That makes the world go round It makes the days pass easier When your stuck and your feeling down Oh ill send this song to you Cause I know you like to dream I hope we can dream together. Softly, quietly I want to dream together Anyone with any sense Would stop the record there They’d lift the needle, close the lid Pull the plug and get out of there Oh but your just a little bit different And everyone agrees Instead of seeking safety You want your destiny So you get it all together And then your getting on a train To see a man in Danville Whose standing in the rain Oh maybe you should slow it down Why do you think it’s true And how many times will you trust a man When a man says “I love you” How many times will you trust a man Evening came to Danville Waiting on a train Waiting for the one you love, standing in the rain

My baby don’t love me anymore My baby don’t love me anymore She walks around like it’s springtime And I feel like its fall My baby don’t love me anymore My baby don’t call me on the phone She tired and says she wants to be alone Said everything she wants to say And what is done is done My baby don’t love me anymore Springtime bring’s the flowers Flowers will bring the bees Snow melts from the mountains And flows down through the streets Everything keeps changing And so are you and me I want to find an answer, but all I do is weep My baby don’t hug me anymore Awkwardly outside the grocery store I want to say something clever She says she’s got to go My baby don’t hug me anymore

Train whistle blows. Where do you go? My mind feels heavy And my body feels old I’ve got no time for talking, I’ve been working all day But I don’t work tomorrow or again the next day I’ve got a woman who loves me, despite who I am She treats me really good helps me feel like a man Now the days are getting shorter, nights are getting long Sitting by the fire writing songs I’ve got friends out in Utah who faced tragedy Buried a brother, who had three mouths to feed Now they’re gonna raise those kids, to work and to play It’s gonna be a hard life, and loves on the way There’s food on the table, friends at the door We live in a place where there’s always more yeah we live in a place of more than enough It could have been different, it could have been rough It takes one to know one, we all know that’s true And loving ain’t easy, but it’s the right thing to do Live a good life, that’s what they say My life is easy. I’m lucky that way.

It was a tropical storm, now it’s a hurricane It’s gonna hit at high tide, and its a bringin lots of rain It’s on the radio wherever you go Somebody cries, cause somebody died Colorado mountains were dry, the wind picked up and the sparks did fly Can you tell me what you’ve learned 100,000 acres burned Tornado warning sounds, we go hiding underground The next day looked like pick-up sticks Even knocked down. The house of brick Crazy hailstorm ruined our crops, Arctic melting never stops It snowed last may in Arkansas, it rained last Christmas up in St. Paul

Well the worlds gone crazy I think I see the end Nobody wants to work it out . They’re burning cars in the precincts There’s the threat of a third world war, and I just want to sit in the middle I want to take my time, I want to love a little Somebody’s talkin, how it’s supposed to be And someone is sayin. That’s got nothing to do with me Now I’ve got a life worth living, I do it every day Look at how it’s going, be about today Oh, and baby can you see it, can you see the signs Well you know that I need it. A little peace of mind Fell in love for the first time, I didn’t know what I was doing Fell in love for the last time, I was like a town laying in ruins I can’t make sense of it, I want to clear the air Take my heart, take my soul, I’m too old to care I open up my door and hear the sound of a creek Constantly changing, constantly with me Fed by the melting glaciers whose end is on the way And no one seems to understand, we can’t live that way
